April 8 ~ A Stroll Among Canadian Composers ~ Canada

APRIL 8, 2018
What: Live Performance with Film ~ Joyce Lai, violin; Erika Crinó, piano

Canada’s history of musical composition spans genres from classical to rock, indigenous to new wave, opera to film. For a nation only one hundred and fifty years young, Canadian composers have imagined soundscapes that are both unique, pushing the boundary of musical form, as well as traditional, complementing established styles. The chosen documentaries sample only a minuscule subset of Canadian composers, exploring their passions, their muses, their creative insights. Taken from the archives of the National Film of Canada – one of Canada’s cherished institutions – the films provide a glimpse into Canada’s musical heritage.

The DeSales University Chorale and Schola Cantorum

Featured on this year’s concert is a set of pieces based on biblical love poetry from the Song of Solomon, proclaiming that “many waters cannot quench love,” composed by Rene Clausen, Ola Gjeilo, Healey Willan, and William Billings. These pieces are paired with several folk song arrangements by composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams and Craig Hella Johnson that express the ability of love to overcome even the most powerful forces of water. A number of other selections will also be performed, including a set of part-songs by the great Johannes Brahms, performed by the Schola Cantorum.

July 1 ~ France and America: The Old World Meets the New ~ Chicago
location chgo
JULY 1, 2018
What: Organ Recital: "France and America: The Old World Meets the New"

In this program, organist Zacchaeus Lock will explore some of the great works from the Americas and from France. While the music of France might at times be characterized by its tradition and restraint, some French composers have certainly eschewed such processes, opting instead for a courageous musical individualism similar to that found in the music of composers from the Americas. Gospel tunes and Gregorian Chant will collide in an entertaining program of 19th and 20h century music, including works of Jean Langlais, William Bolcom, Olivier Messiaen, Paul Hindemith, Louis-James-Alfred Lefebure-Wely, Jehan Alain, César Franck, Charles Ives, and Healey Willan.

July 6 ~ AGO - Practical Service Music: Hymn Preludes by Healey Willan ~ Kansas City
JULY 6, 2018
What: American Guild of Organists' Convention
Featuring: An Exploration of Healey Willan's Hymn Tunes

Healey Willan is best known for Introduction, passacaglia and fugue in E flat minor (Op. 149), which Joseph Bonnet proclaimed as one of the most significant since Bach’s. We should not, however, let this massive, virtuosic work eclipse his large volume of sacred organ works that are accessible and effective. In fact, by the mid-twentieth century, Willan established himself as the most leading church composer in North America: in a 1953 list compiled from thirty-seven leading choirs in the United States and Canada, Willan ranked second only to Bach in the frequency of use of his music.

In 1950 in his seventieth year, Willan started a long series of almost 100 chorale preludes. Thirty Hymn Tune Preludes in 3 sets (Op. 169, 173 and 174) published by for C.F. Peters between 1956 and 1958 are some of the fine examples. The rich, often chromatic harmonic language and resourceful treatments of familiar hymn tunes such as HYFRYDOL, ST. FLAVIAN, OLD HUNDREDTH, O FILII ET FILIAE, EBENEZER, DEO GRACIAS, and many others, along with their modest length (3-5 pages) and difficulty level, make them particularly suitable as service music.

The purpose of this workshop is two-fold: (1) to discover the multi-faceted life of this consummate musician as a choirmaster, organist, composer, teacher and conductor (as meticulously depicted in F.R.C. Clarke’s Healey Willan: Life and Music) and (2) to hear several examples which could be your next organ prelude or postlude from the above-reviewed repertoire ranging from prayerful to exhilarating.

Program:
-Edvard Grieg, Sonata n.3 Op. 45 in DO min. (written by the Norweigan composer in honor of Teresina's talent, following her visit to his home in Bergen.)
-Healey Willan, Sonata n.1 in MI minore HWC100. (written by the Canadian composer in honor of the 50th anniversary of his death. The Saint John Cantius of Chicago Church promotes the Healey Willan Society).
-Sandro Fuga, Sonata n.3 (composed in honor of Italian music and music from Turin from the 1900s).

Teresina Tua (Maria Felicita Tua) was an Italian violinist born in Turin on April 23, 1866. Her first instruction was received from her father, Antonio Tua, who was an amateur violinist, and under whom she learned so rapidly that she appeared in public when was only seven years old. During her first tour she played at Nice, and there gained the interest of Madam Rosen, a wealthy Russian, who was instrumental in sending her to Paris, where she studied at the Conservatoire under Massart and in 1880 received a first prize.

In 1881 she made a tour through France, Spain and Italy, going to Vienna in 1882 and appeared at the Crystal Palace in London in May 5, 1883. It has been said that in Europe, everywhere she played, she created a sensation. For a time, she was called the “violin fairy” for her angelic face and good looks. Grieg met the twenty-year-old Italian violinist Teresina Tua and claimed that a new composition for violin would be because of her (the Sonata n.3). The great Norwegian composer had recently built a new house, Troldhaugen (Norwegian for “Troll Hill”), so he called Tua “the little fiddle-fairy on my troll-hill.” Tua also played for Verdi in Genoa, for Wagner in Nice, for Liszt in Rome (who promised her a violin concert). Brahms was her accompanist to the piano in a private concerto at his home in Wien. In 1885 she toured all Russia by a special train placed at her disposal by the Tsar. Her accompanist was none other than Sergei Rachmaninoff. She played in America during 1887 with great success and received rave reviews in the press. After she returned to Europe, Tua seemed to gradually lose interest in concertizing further but devoted some of her time to teaching. About 1891 she was married to Count Giuseppe Ippolito Franchi-Vernay della Valletta (a distinguished Italian critic) and retired from the stage, although she was frequently heard in concerts in Italy. In 1895 she made a successful tour of Europe and in 1897 played in concert in St. James' Hall, London, where was enthusiastically received. When Count Franchi-Vernay died in 1911, two years after she married another aristocrat, Count Emilio Angelo Quadrio who died in 1933. In 1940, Teresina Tua entered a convent in Rome and give her violin Stradivari (“Mond”, 1709) up to the Turin Conservatoire. She was 74 years old. Tua died on October 29, 1956, at age 90, largely forgotten.

Biography: David Troiano
The organ recitals of David Troiano have garnered notice for their clean performances, musicality, and interesting repertoire. He has appeared throughout the United States, Canada, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania (’16) and four tours in Finland with Baroque Violinist Tapani Yriola. He has also appeared in several of the great sacred spaces of Mexico including two appearances at LA BASILICA in Mexico City.

With particular focus and interest in the music of the Spanish Baroque and the Spanish-speaking world, he has given lecture/recitals at AGO Regional Meetings; Symposiums on Spanish and Latin American Music (Almeria, Spain 2010 and 2016; Tucson 2009, 2011, 2013); and has provided a recording for FIMTE which honored the 500th Anniversary of Antonio Cabezon. Always interested in new sounds for the Organ, he has commissioned and premiered several new works: TAU by Mexican Composer and Physician Armando Torres; OBSESSIONEERING by American Composer Armando Bayolo; HYMN SUITE by Gilbert Martin; and MISSION BELLS by Miguel Del Aguila of Uruguay/California.

He received the Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Michigan where he trained under the legendary Marilyn Mason with Harpsichord studies and the brilliant Harpsichordist Edward Parmentier. Dr. Troiano currently serves St. Clare of Montefalco Parish in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan as Director of Liturgical Music.

David Troiano has been praised for the beauty of his voice, attention to musical detail and strong characterizations. His Lyric Tenor voice has been heard in a substantial amount of stage roles in Opera and Operetta (including Zarzuela) in addition to orchestral concerts. His dedication to American Art Song has been heard in over Eighty-five recitals to great acclaim throughout the United States and abroad. With the COMIC OPERA GUILD of Ann Arbor, he has recorded nearly Fifty premiere CD’s of the little-known stage works of Herbert, Kern, Sousa, and others. Other highlights include the world premier recording of a Christmas Pastorale by Paul Paray in which he can be heard as the Narrator. In 2006, he was a participant at the Festival of Spanish and Latin American Art Song Festival in Barcelona. In 2010, he performed as the tenor soloist with the St. John’s Boychoir of Warsaw on their American Tour. This included a recital at the Marcela Sembrich Museum in Bolton Landing, New York. Mr. Troiano earned the Master of Arts Degree in Voice Performance from Wayne State University where he currently teaches as an Adjunct Professor of Voice.

Choral conducting responsibilities have included direction for Musicals at the Bonstelle Theater (WSU), and for several seasons with community and semi-professional theaters in Michigan. Since 1997 he has served as the Choral Director for the International Symphony Orchestra Association whose repertoire is primarily from the major Oratorios and other concert works. From 2007 to 2008 he was the musical director for the FILARETS Chorus, a Polish-language chorus that has been involved in the Detroit area for over 80 years. Under his direction, the chorus won First Place in both the Mixed and Men’s Division at the National Convention held in May 2014. Currently, he serves as Assistant National Choral Director for the Polish Singers Alliance of America. Since 2010, Troiano has been seen (alternating with performing) on the podium with the COG in presenting several rarely-heard operettas with recordings for the Guild.
